Nascar – Showtime Southern 500 race preview
Less than two weeks to go before the green flag is dropped at Darlington Raceway for the Showtime Southern 500 on May 8. Showtime has stepped in to sponsor this year’s race after GoDaddy.com was the title sponsor last year. 500 miles is a real test at Darlington and a true team effort will be reqired to pull into victory lane.
Last year Mark Martin cruised to victory for his first Sprint Cup win at the track “too tough to tame.” Past winners include points leader Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Greg Biffle who has won here multiple times.
There is a lot of history at Darlington. Oldtimers will remember it as NASCAR‘s first superspeedway. The egg-shaped oval has now been hosting NASCAR sanctioned events for over 60 years, and it still remains many driver’s favorite place to race. Once again this year’s race will be held on Mother’s Day. It should be a special day for the NASCAR family.
This year the race is really up for grabs. The races coming into Darlingron have been close and tensions are starting to flare up earlier than usual. The Hendrick teams have been running well, but look for someone like Juan Pablo Montoya, Joey Logano, or Tony Stewart to break through at Darlington. Someone will take the checkered flag, and it should be a great race.
