2010 NASCAR All-Star Race Preview

On May 22nd, Charlotte Motor Speedway will play host to the annual All-Star Race. This race is not a “points race,” meaning that there are no points awarded toward the year-end championship. Instead, this race is a winner takes all event, where drivers take many chances to win that they normally would think twice about.

The first NASCAR All-Star race was in 1985, and only 12 drivers were in the field. Now, any driver who has won a race since the last All-Star race is eligible, as are any former NASCAR Sprint Cup Champions and previous winners of the All-Star race.

Before the race, there is an “All-Star Open” event, in which all drivers not already eligible for the All-Star race get to battle it out. The winner of that event gets into the All-Star race to vie for the $1 Million dollar prize. The last driver to get in is a “Fan’s Choice,” where the fans vote in a driver of their choosing.

Also unique to the All-Star race is that the event is broken up into segments, with breaks in between. This usually leads to a 10-25 lap shootout where anything can, and usually does, happen. The only sure thing is that the racing during this event is never boring.

Former winners of this event include Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Darrell Waltrip, all internet sportsbook favorite. As you can see, many legends have added to their legacy in this event. Tune in on May 22nd to see who makes history again.
