Ford 400 In Homestead Sets Up Classic Championship Battle

The Ford 400 on the Homestead-Miami Speedway will set the stage for one of the closest NASCAR Sprint Cup Championships in the history of the sport. Denny Hamlin enters the race with a slim 15 point lead over four time defending champion, Jimmie Johnson. Also in the mix is Kevin Harvick in third place just 46 points out of first.

After their Texas win, Denny Hamlin and crew chief of the No. 11 FedEx Toyota, Mike Ford were talking about getting in the heads of Jimmie Johnson and his crew chief Chad Knaus. Johnson relished in the No.11 teams fuel mileage snafu and took every opportunity in the subsequent interviews after the Phoenix race to say the pressure is on Hamlin and company because the No. 48 Lowe’s team was on his heels.

The man no one is talking about is Kevin Harvick just 46 points out in third place. No doubt that Harvick will need some help to win the NASCAR title. Harvick will need to lead the most laps for 10 bonus points and win the race to score max points and then Hamlin and Johnson will have to fall out of the top ten.

Outside of the NASCAR title chasers there are several drivers that have a good shot to win the Ford 400. The Roush Fenway contingent always posts strong finishes in the last race of the season. Carl Edwards is coming off a win in Phoenix and Matt Kenseth has run well in recent races. Don’t count out Greg Biffle, another Roush Fenway driver that performs well on the Homestead-Miami track.
