Major NASCAR rule changes coming this week
A rule change that will prevent NASCAR drivers from competing for a championship in more than one of the three national touring series will be announced this week, NASCAR president Mike Helton said Friday.
Helton also said a possible revision of the Sprint Cup points system by the sport’s sanctioning body is being considered.
The news surfaced when NASCAR officials addressed the news media with a “competition update” at Daytona International Speedway ahead of the season-opening Daytona 500 race on Feb. 20.
In auto racing betting lines, NASCAR Betting Odds for the Daytona 500 are not yet available.
Sprint Cup Series teams were gathered at Daytona over the weekend for a three-day test session on the newly-paved track.
Helton stressed that Sprint Cup drivers won’t be prevented from competing in the annual Nationwide and/or Camping World Truck Series races. But he said Cup regulars won’t be allowed to contend for a championship in either one of those series.
The new rule will allow a full-time driver in either Nationwide or Camping World Truck to win a championship in his respective series.
“The most important element was for NASCAR to maintain its open policy for anybody who wants to compete and has the credentials to compete can compete in any series that they want to compete in,” Helton said.
There are also reports that NASCAR is looking at a 43-to-1 points structure, in which 43 points would be awarded to the race winner, and then a one-point drop for each finishing from there.
