Daytona 500 opens NASCAR Racing Season

When Dale Earnhardt Jr. brings the field to take the green flag on Sunday it will set in motion one of the fastest and possibly the wildest Daytona 500 ever. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the sentimental favorite to win the race that took his father’s life 10 years ago.

The betting favorite going into the Daytona 500 is Kevin Harvick, the man that replaced Dale Earnhardt Sr. after his death at Daytona in 2001.

Harvick is at +700 in NASCAR Odds according to popular sports betting sites.

Harvick has assumed the role as the premiere restrictor plate driver much like his predecessor Earnhardt. Harvick has the instincts and guts required to bury the throttle and bump draft in the most difficult situations on this track. It is the main reason he is one of the favorites to raise the Daytona 500 trophy over his head.

This race will be wide open when it comes down to the final few laps. With NASCAR changes the cooling hoses and restrictor plates, the drivers will be anxious to bump draft and jostle once the race comes down to the final few laps.

Drivers that have mastered the new art of the two car breakaway will be the biggest threats to win. Look for Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Jamie McMurray to play a major role in the outcome of this race because they have shown the most skill in the two car draft situations. Two other drivers that should not be ruled out are teammates Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. Newman ran up front most of the Bud Shootout.
